The Best Things to do When Visiting Boston

October 16, 2019

At least once a week someone says to me, “Help! I have a visitor coming this weekend, what should I do with them?” It’s funny how you can live in a city with so much to do, but get so caught up in your weekly routine that you forget about all that Boston has to offer. To make my life and my friends’ easier, I decided to round up all the best things to do by type of visitor. You can of course always find weekly events on Thursdays and Fridays on my Instagram stories during my Weekend Roundup feature, or from my rainy day guide here.

For the Kid at Heart

  • Play arcade games, bowl and more at Lucky Strike Social in Boston or Somerville

  • Take your escape room skills to the next level at Boda Borg

  • Catch a game - between the Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots, there’s likely one playing during any given week

For the Adventurer

  • Take a ferry out to the Boston Harbor Islands

  • Rent and ride a Bluebike around the Charles River

  • Walk the Freedom Trail - top attraction locals never see (probably). You can also turn this into a bar crawl.

For the Jokester

  • Make sonnets enjoyable at Shitfaced Shakespeare

  • Catch a show at the Improv Asylum, Laugh Boston or go see Shear Madness

For the Drinker

  • Visit a brewery - Dorchester Brewing, Sam Adams, Harpoon, Trillium and Night Shift are just a few of the many local spots

  • Get served a cocktail tailored to your taste buds at Drink

  • Have a tiki drink and be transported to a tropical oasis at Shore Leave

  • Enjoy wine at Rebel Rebel or beer at Remnant, then grab a bite from the amazing food vendors at Bow Market

For the Foodie

  • Eat your way through the Time Out Market in Fenway

  • Explore the delights of Italy at Eataly

  • Do your own dumpling crawl in Chinatown, or visit two of my favorite modern Asian fusion spots, Shojo and Double Chin

  • Sample all the donuts and determine which is best -Blackbird, Union Square or Kane’s

For the Shopper

  • SoWa Open Market - Everything you could ever want; a farmers market, vintage market, beer hall, food trucks and local makers

  • Shop the small, local spots in Beacon Hill and the South End

  • Power walk and shop down Newbury Street

Take Them on a Day Trip

Check out my guides for Portland, Provincetown, Newport, and coming soon, New Hampshire.

So the next time your mom calls and says she’s coming down for the weekend, be sure to reference this guide and keep her entertained.
